Into Your Hands, O Lord
Into Your Hands, O Lord
Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father! In your hands I place my Spirit!" - Luke 23:46
The greatest act of worship we can give God is to place our lives into his hands. The fullness of the gift can only be given when time ends for us, when we are asked to surrender everything in total trust to God. In the meantime, there are numerous opportunities for surrendering what we can into the caring hands of God. We let go of childhood in order to grow into adolescence. We let go of adolescence in order to grow into adulthood. Finally, we gradually surrender the strength of young adulthood as we grow in age. Everything we have is given back in trust to the source from which it came.
Throughout our lives, we gradually let go of the goals and pleasures that once served our needs so that we can grow into the enjoyment of new ones. This is what it means to grow in wisdom. We let go of what was once useful to us, because our changing lives make new demands and present new opportunities. Ideally, as we grow in wisdom, we let go of selfish and material goals in order to embrace altruistic and spiritual ones.
Letting go and surrendering our lives to God is sometimes painful, but the growth we experience from the surrender leads to a sense of fulfillment. Hanging on to what served us in the past prevents us from becoming the fully developed persons that we were created to be.
Daily, I wish to surrender my life into your hands, Lord, until I make the ultimate surrender that leads to the complete fulfillment of eternal life. May I have the courage to say daily, "Father, in your hands I place my spirit."
